The CoolCo district cooling system consists of a central plant and a satellite plant that produce 10,000+ tons of chilled water which is then piped throughout the Cincinnati central business district through a network of more than 1.5 miles of underground pipe to deliver chilled water to buildings to meet the customer’s cooling needs.
CoolCo’s has several large industrial chillers to reduce the temperature (or extract heat) from the chilled water loop. Once the temperature of the water is reduced, it is circulated back to the buildings (1) where it is used to remove heat and humidity from the internal spaces by cooling the air passing through the air handling units (2). The heat removed from the building is captured in the return water (3) and returned to the chiller plant to start the chilling process again. In addition to air conditioning, customers use chilled water to remove heat loads from refrigeration system and from production processes.
CoolCo’s chiller plant is very flexible and managing the system load with one off-site chiller or production asset to replace multiple chillers in multiple buildings results in higher efficiency for both the production plant and the customer buildings.
